Frequently asked questions
Why are my dentures loose?
Dentures can become loose due to numerous factors such as ageing, significant weight loss, shrinking or flabby gums, resorption of the bone (shrinking), and in some cases from not wearing dentures. Following Immediate dentures, this process is accelerated as the bone once supporting the teeth begins to collapse and recede. As there is not much that can be done to stop these factors completely, consistent maintenance and follow up visits with your prosthetist for adjustments, relines and repairs will reduce the symptoms of loose fitting dentures.
How often should I replace my Dentures?
Everyone is different, some people experience significant changes in their mouth over a short period of time, while others may experience no changes over a longer time period. The same can be said regarding patient habits such as grinding, clenching, or having a strong/hard bite.
This can cause an accelerated wear pattern of the teeth, and may cause stress fractures that can negatively affect the lifespan of the denture. A well maintained denture has a good lifespan of around 6-8 years. If taken care of properly and if the denture exhibits good anatomy of its occlusion, your denture may last even longer.
Can I sleep in my Dentures?
Professional advice changes over the years, but the simple answer is: No. Dentures should be removed of a night time to allow the gums, muscles and ligaments of your jaw to relax. Just like your body as you head to sleep, your mouth also needs to rest just as much.
However, some patients may be required to wear their dentures at night due to medical conditions. It is best to seek advice from your prosthetist about what is right for you.
